Welcome to Birding Detective
Birding Detective was created to help people discover the birds around them, learn where to look for them, and understand why their habitats matter.
Whether you are watching birds from a backyard window, walking a local trail, or planning a trip to a Wisconsin birding spot, there is always something new to notice.
A Lifelong Fascination with Birds
My interest in birds began when I was young. I would watch them and wonder what it would feel like to fly — to lift off the ground and move freely through the air.
One memory has stayed with me for years. My dad and I were driving down a quiet country road on our way to go fishing when a small blue bird began flying next to the car. Its wings seemed to be moving incredibly fast, yet somehow it kept pace with us.
I do not know whether it was an Eastern Bluebird, a swallow, or another small blue bird. What I do know is that the moment stayed with me. It helped shape a lifelong curiosity about birds and the remarkable things they can do.
Why I Created Birding Detective
Birding Detective is designed to make birdwatching easier, more enjoyable, and more approachable.
You do not need to be an expert to become interested in birds. Sometimes all it takes is noticing one bird outside a window, hearing an unfamiliar song, or watching a bird do something unexpected.
The goal of this website is to help people learn about birds one species, one habitat, and one location at a time.
Birding Detective begins as a Wisconsin-first birding resource, with guides to birds, counties, parks, trails, wildlife areas, and beginner-friendly birding spots. Over time, the site will grow to include bird profiles, hotspot guides, practical birding tips, seasonal information, and ideas for finding birds in the places where they live.
Birding and Conservation
The more we learn about birds, the easier it becomes to understand why healthy habitats matter.
Birds depend on forests, wetlands, grasslands, shorelines, rivers, parks, native gardens, and even the shrubs and trees in our own neighborhoods. Small actions can help, from planting native flowers to keeping feeders clean, reducing pesticide use, protecting windows from bird collisions, and respecting nesting areas.
Birding Detective is not only about finding birds. It is also about appreciating them, learning what they need, and doing what we can to help protect the places they depend on.
An Invitation to Explore
A lifelong interest in birds can begin with a single moment. For me, it was a little blue bird flying beside a car on a country road.
Your own moment might happen at a backyard feeder, beside a marsh, during a walk through a park, or while hearing a bird song you have never noticed before.
Wherever your interest begins, I hope Birding Detective helps you enjoy the journey.
